The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken a significant step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in governance by approving the formation of a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee. This committee is tasked with investigating the administration of the former Governor, Godwin Obaseki.
The committee, set to be inaugurated on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Government House in Benin City, will be chaired by Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, with Anslem Ojezua as the deputy chairman and Frank Edebor serving as the secretary. Other esteemed members of the committee include Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, Taiwo Akerele, Patrick Idiake, Rasaq Bello-Osagie, Fredrick Unopah, Abdallah Eugenia, Patrick Obahiagbon, Kenny Okojie, Lyndsey Tes-Sorae, and Abass Braimoh.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, outlined the rationale behind the committee's formation. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the governor’s commitment to fostering development and promoting accountable leadership. The statement revealed that the previous administration had failed to provide a comprehensive database of its assets and liabilities, offering only limited and insufficient details.
According to Itua, the committee's establishment fulfills Governor Okpebholo’s campaign promise to prioritize probity, accountability, and transparency in governance. He noted that the committee comprises respected individuals from Edo State, whose expertise and integrity are expected to guide the verification process effectively.
The inauguration of the committee is scheduled to take place at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, at 1:00 pm prompt. The governor has expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver on its mandate, paving the way for a more transparent and accountable administration.
Earlier indications suggested that the new Edo State government was considering a probe into the previous administration following reports from permanent secretaries of various ministries. These reports highlighted concerns over the management of state resources and the need for a thorough evaluation.
A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that Governor Okpebholo is currently reviewing these reports to assess the performance of the Obaseki-led administration. The findings, according to the official, will determine the scope and extent of the committee's investigations. The official reaffirmed the administration's commitment to prioritizing the interests of the people of Edo State in all its endeavors.
