Godwin Emmanuel, a 23-year-old armed robbery suspect, shocked many after admitting to stealing a police officer’s phone inside a patrol van while being transported to the Osun State Police Command.
Emmanuel was apprehended alongside two accomplices—28-year-old Olajide Kareem and 33-year-old Mike Emmanuel—following a series of criminal activities, including robbery and the sexual assault of a 65-year-old woman on the Ilesa-Osu Expressway in Osun State. The elderly woman, who was accompanying her husband to the hospital, fell victim to the gang’s violent attack.
The Spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, disclosed the suspects’ arrest during their public parade. Opalola revealed, “The three suspects have been robbing motorists and passengers on the highway. In one instance, a bus driver was shot in the leg but was later rushed to the Seventh-day Adventist Hospital in Ile-Ife, where he received treatment. Olajide Kareem was apprehended in the bush and confessed to being part of a five-man robbery gang originating from the Ikorodu area of Lagos State. The other two suspects were subsequently arrested as well.”
In a candid confession, Godwin Emmanuel narrated how he committed the audacious theft. “I was arrested for armed robbery. While being transported to the Police Command in Osogbo inside the patrol van, I stole a phone. I didn’t know it was a police phone. I only wanted to call my family because they didn’t know I had been arrested. I removed the SIM card to make the call,” he admitted.
He further explained that he carried the stolen phone into the police cell undetected. “After about two months in custody, the police searched me and found the phone. I pleaded with them not to be angry. I didn’t know what I was doing. Please tell them to forgive me. I won’t do it again,” Emmanuel pleaded.
The suspects are currently in custody and face charges related to their criminal activities. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring justice and protecting citizens from criminal elements.
