Nigerian investigative journalist and founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo, has spoken out following his recent detention by the Nigerian Army 6 Division over alleged involvement in illegal oil bunkering.
The journalist's arrest occurred in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and was initially reported by FIJ. The Army clarified the situation in a statement on Friday, explaining that Soyombo was arrested alongside other suspects at an illegal oil bunkering site. However, amid public outcry, the Army released Soyombo late Friday night.
In a statement released on Saturday, Soyombo expressed his gratitude to Nigerians for their support. He acknowledged the public's efforts, particularly on social media, under the hashtag #FreeFisayoNow, and the coverage provided by traditional media outlets. Soyombo stated, "I’m a free man today because of your social media engagements with #FreeFisayoNow and the publications/broadcasts by the traditional media. And I can prove it."
Soyombo detailed his experience in detention, revealing that he was arrested early on Wednesday morning and subjected to intense questioning by different levels of the Army throughout the day. His case was later forwarded to a superior office for further interrogation. Surprisingly, Thursday passed without any further developments. He soon learned that the Army would take as much time as needed to verify his identity as an investigative journalist.
On Friday morning, Soyombo was unexpectedly transferred to the Military Intelligence Brigade (MIB). It was during this transfer that he encountered someone who recognized him from the news, which led to his eventual release. Soyombo emphasized that without the public’s pressure, he might still be in detention, "away from civilisation and held incommunicado."
He concluded his statement by thanking everyone who contributed to his release, saying, "So, yes, my freedom is your freedom. This victory exists because of you, you and you. Thank you!"
