Breaking! INSECURITY: Gunmen Block Highway, Kidnap Several Travellers on Sunday

Suspected armed bandits launched an attack on Saturday, October 13, 2024, on the Gusau-Funtua highway in Zamfara State, Nigeria. The heavily armed attackers blocked the road between Kucheri and Magazu communities in Tsafe Local Government Area, where they abducted an unspecified number of travellers.

Eyewitness reports indicate that the bandits opened fire on passing vehicles, creating chaos and leading to the mass abduction of commuters. The exact number of those kidnapped remains unclear. The Zamfara State Police Command, through its spokesperson, ASP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident. According to him, security forces are currently engaged in joint rescue operations to ensure the safe return of the victims.

“The incident happened this afternoon. The bandits blocked the road and started shooting at the commuters, they kidnapped some of them. The command in collaboration with other security agencies is working hand in hand to make sure the kidnapped victims are rescued,” Abubakar stated. However, he denied rumors circulating that five mobile policemen were taken hostage during a reported shootout with the assailants.

This incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks that have plagued Zamfara and surrounding states in northwestern and central Nigeria. Armed gangs in the region, often referred to as "bandits," have carried out mass abductions, looted communities, and burnt homes in a campaign driven largely by financial motives. These criminals maintain camps in expansive forest areas straddling Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Niger states.

In recent weeks, bandit activity has intensified, particularly in Katsina and Zamfara states. Just last month, 25 people, mostly local vigilantes, were killed during a raid on four villages in Katsina’s Sabuwa district. These attacks appear to be reprisals for military operations targeting the bandits’ hideouts.

Although the bandits are not driven by any ideological cause, concerns are growing over their increasing collaboration with jihadist groups in the northeast, where an armed insurgency has been raging for the past 15 years.

Efforts to restore security in the affected areas remain ongoing, with federal and state authorities working in coordination with the military and other security agencies to counter the threat posed by these armed gangs.
