BREAKING: Chief of Staff Resigns

Sue Gray has stepped down from her position as Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, citing concerns that recent controversies surrounding her role were distracting from the government's work.

In her resignation statement, Ms Gray emphasized the privilege of contributing to the Labour Party’s rise to government and her role within No. 10 Downing Street. She expressed her concerns about the increasing focus on her position, which, she feared, could detract from the administration's focus on critical reforms. “For that reason, I have chosen to step aside,” she said, though she confirmed her continued support for the Prime Minister in a new capacity.

Ms Gray’s departure comes in the wake of scrutiny regarding her salary, which was revealed to surpass that of Prime Minister Starmer, as well as controversy over political donations received from Lord Waheed Alli. Despite these challenges, she will transition into a new role as the Prime Minister’s envoy for nations and regions, a move confirmed by a Downing Street spokesperson.

Following her resignation, Labour announced that Morgan McSweeney, a key adviser to the Prime Minister and the architect behind Labour's election campaign, will take over as the new Chief of Staff.

Prime Minister Starmer expressed his gratitude for Ms Gray's contributions and noted that he was pleased she would remain in a supportive role within the government. He added that the reshuffle was part of his "determination to deliver" on the Labour Party’s promises.

This development highlights ongoing shifts within the Labour government as it navigates its policy agenda amidst external scrutiny.
