INSECURITY: LG Chairman Bans Public Gathering

The Chairman of Ivo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Mr. Emmanuel Ajah, has imposed a five-day ban on public gatherings in Ihie Autonomous Community from September 26 to 30, 2024, due to escalating security concerns in the area.

In a statement issued by Mr. Ajah, he emphasized that the ban was a response to rising security threats that could disrupt the peaceful coexistence of residents. The restrictions include a prohibition on media coverage, musical entertainment, and cultural displays during the specified period.

Mr. Ajah explained that the current situation in the community is critical and could escalate into a full-blown crisis if not handled with care. He stressed that the ban applies to any public event within the community or its four kindreds.

The council has also placed a ban on the community's planned new yam festival and other socio-cultural activities. The restrictions will affect the traditional ruling council, youth wing, and any planned coronations.

The chairman warned that anyone who violates the security directive would face legal consequences. He underscored that this measure is necessary to prevent further deterioration of the community's security.

A community source, speaking anonymously, revealed that the crisis stems from allegations that Mr. Ajah is attempting to remove the traditional ruler due to alleged underperformance and insubordination. The source suggested that the cancellation of the new yam festival and other cultural events was part of this effort to undermine the community’s leadership.

This decision has created tension within the community, as residents are now faced with the uncertainty of how long the ban will last and what impact it will have on their traditional customs and leadership.
