Gruesome Murder of Enugu Market Leader: Police Provide Fresh Details on Investigation

The Enugu State Police Command has released new information regarding the tragic murder of Mr. Stephen Aniago, the Chairman of the Ogbete Main Market Traders Association (OMATA), Enugu. Aniago was shot and killed in a brazen attack at Moses Ogbodo Junction, near Topland Market, located in the Amaechi area of Enugu South Local Government, on Saturday, September 14, 2024.

In an official statement to the media on Sunday, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Command’s spokesperson, confirmed that the police operatives are actively pursuing the armed suspects behind the attack. According to the preliminary findings, the assailants, who were driving a Toyota Corolla, intercepted Aniago’s vehicle and fatally shot him before making off with his blue Toyota Corolla.

“Police operatives who arrived swiftly at the scene rushed the victim to the hospital,” DSP Ndukwe said. “However, he was unfortunately confirmed dead by doctors. His remains have been deposited in the mortuary as further investigations continue.”

The police have assured the public that they are sparing no effort in tracking down those responsible. Commissioner of Police (CP) Kanayo Uzuegbu, psc (+), has ordered the deployment of tactical units to ensure that the criminals are apprehended. Additionally, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been tasked with leading a discreet investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

CP Uzuegbu also reiterated the police's commitment to justice, stating, "The police will leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous act to book as soon as possible."

This shocking murder has left the Enugu community in mourning, with market traders and residents alike calling for swift justice and increased security measures in the area.
