BREAKING: A Nigerian From Anambra Becomes the First Black President of the Prestigious University of New York OSWEGO

A Nigerian, Peter O. Nwosu is set to be inaugurated as the 11th President of the State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY Oswego). The inauguration, scheduled for Friday, September 27, 2024, will mark a historic moment as Nwosu becomes the first African-born president and immigrant to lead the 163-year-old institution.

Nwosu, originally from northern Nigeria, officially took up his position on August 15, 2023. His leadership ushers in a new era for SUNY Oswego, making him the institution’s first president of color. His appointment reflects the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, while also embracing a transformative vision aimed at ensuring the institution's future growth and sustainability.

A central aspect of Nwosu’s presidency is his ambitious "Vision 4040" plan. This initiative seeks to double the number of degrees awarded by SUNY Oswego from 20,000 to 40,000 by the year 2040. With this bold strategy, Nwosu aims to strengthen the institution’s role in addressing the educational and economic needs of Central New York. His focus will be on promoting upward mobility for students from diverse backgrounds, ensuring access to high-quality education, and driving regional economic development.

As part of this vision, the university also announced the launch of the Transforming Lives Scholarship, designed to support students who will benefit from SUNY Oswego’s transformative education. Alumni and community members are encouraged to contribute to the scholarship fund.

The inauguration will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Deborah F. Stanley Arena and Convocation Hall, named after the previous president. The event will feature a keynote speech by Donald Taylor, an emeritus professor from California State University, Sacramento, who served as Nwosu’s mentor. Musical performances, student readings, and reflections from key university leaders will also highlight the occasion.

For those unable to attend in person, the inauguration will be live-streamed on the university's YouTube channel. The event will be the culmination of a weeklong series of celebrations that includes Founder’s Weekend, Green and Gold Day, and the Dr. Lewis B. O’Donnell Media Summit, as well as the Return to Oz Reunion of Color and the new Sheldon Lecture on Leadership and Service.

Before his appointment at SUNY Oswego, Nwosu served as the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the City University of New York Herbert H. Lehman College. He also held leadership positions at Clark Atlanta University and California State University, Fullerton. With a Ph.D. in communication studies from Howard University, Nwosu has authored over 100 scholarly works and remains an active member of various local, regional, and national boards, including the Oswego County Micron Strategy Steering Committee.

Nwosu’s historic appointment has drawn praise from across the university and beyond. Mary Canale, Vice President for University Advancement, expressed her admiration for Nwosu’s vision, stating, “President Nwosu has already impressed us with his ability to connect with our students, alumni, and the wider community. His leadership will undoubtedly shape the future of SUNY Oswego.”

Rich Bush, co-chair of the inauguration committee, added, “This inauguration is not just about President Nwosu but is also a celebration of what SUNY Oswego has to offer. The entire week showcases the achievements of our students and alumni.”

While SUNY Oswego embarks on this new chapter under Nwosu’s leadership, the community is excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. For more information on the inauguration and related events, visit oswego.edu/inauguration.
