Enugu State experienced a tragic incident on Saturday evening as a heavy downpour led to the death of an unidentified young lady. Her lifeless body was recovered along Chief SN Ugwu Street, off Cornerstone Road in the Abakpa area of Enugu East Local Government.
Eyewitness reports reveal that the lady was swept away by the flood at Timber Market. It is believed that she had gone to dispose of waste into a drainage during the downpour when the force of the water overwhelmed her.
A resident, Chioma, who witnessed the incident, recounted: "We were all taking shelter from the rain when we saw her heading toward the drainage. Unfortunately, the flood was too strong, and she was carried away."
The body was eventually found over 800 meters away, having been trapped by iron rods in one of the culverts. Despite the challenging conditions caused by the flooding, local residents managed to retrieve her body. However, it was too late, as she was already lifeless by the time they brought her out.
The police from the Abakpa Division have since taken custody of the body as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Other residents were also reportedly injured in coal camp, New Market and New Haven.
This tragic occurrence serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by heavy flooding during the rainy season in Enugu and other parts of Nigeria. Authorities are urged to enhance safety measures and improve drainage systems to prevent future loss of life.
